Bound by Exposure: Assessing How Exposure to Uncivil Political News Affects Perceptions of Democracy

I argue that the more one is exposed to uncivil political news presentations, the more one is likely to endorse political elites’ use of contentious rhetorical styles such as populist appearances, references to conspiracy theory, and defamation as legitimate parts of democratic politics. I conduct a survey experiment exposing a randomly selected treatment group to three political news presentations with uncivil cues. This study finds evidence suggesting that exposure to uncivil news presentations may foster the audiences to endorse populistic, conspiratorial, and defamatory elite political behaviors.
